Why TikTok is especially hard to put down
TikTok’s For You feed is built from short videos that start instantly, one after another, chosen for you. There is no end of the page, no episode boundary and often no reason to stop. That makes TikTok a common place for sessions to run far longer than planned, and a good place to add an end point deliberately.
Set a daily screen time limit in TikTok
According to TikTok’s Help Center:
- Tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu (☰), then Settings and privacy.
- Tap Screen time, then Daily screen time.
- Choose a limit, or set a custom limit for each day of the week.
When you reach the limit, TikTok notifies you. You can close the app or enter a passcode to keep watching, so it works as a reminder rather than a lock. For accounts of users aged 13 to 17, a 60-minute daily limit is turned on by default.
Turn on screen time breaks and sleep reminders
In the same Screen time menu you can set screen time breaks, which prompt you to take a break after a period of uninterrupted watching, and, where available, sleep reminders for a time you choose. Breaks are the more useful setting for doomscrolling because they interrupt one long session instead of counting the whole day.
TikTok’s Screen time dashboard shows your daily time and how often you opened the app. Opening counts tell you whether your problem is a few long sessions or many short checks.
Add an Android timer that pauses TikTok
TikTok’s own limit can be bypassed in a tap. On Android, Settings → Digital Wellbeing → App timers → TikTok → Set timer pauses the app until midnight once the time is used. Add an App limits PIN if you want an extra step before changing it.
Turn off TikTok notifications
Live alerts, suggested videos and activity notifications are designed to bring you back. Turn them off in TikTok’s notification settings, or switch TikTok’s notifications off entirely in Settings → Notifications → App notifications on Android.
Habits that work better than willpower
- Decide the time before you open. “Fifteen minutes of entertainment” is a plan. “Just a quick look” usually is not.
- Do not open TikTok in bed. Late-night sessions are often the longest. See how to stop scrolling before bed.
- Leave a gap between visits. If you open TikTok on every break, set a minimum time between sessions.
- Watch for the switch. If you stop TikTok and immediately open YouTube Shorts or Reels, you have moved the habit, not reduced it.
- Search instead of scroll. If you came for something specific, use search and close the app afterwards.
What research says about cutting back
In a 2022 randomized trial, adults who took a one-week break from social media, including TikTok, reported improvements in well-being, depression and anxiety scores compared with those who carried on. Interestingly, the improvement in anxiety was partly linked to reduced time on TikTok specifically. The study was short and relied on self-reported measures, so it shows what a break can do for some adults, not what TikTok does to everyone.
How Scroll Hush helps with TikTok
On Android, Scroll Hush can monitor TikTok. When you open it, Scroll Hush shows a short pause and asks for your reason and planned time before TikTok loads. You can set a maximum session length, a number of sessions per day and a minimum break between visits, all specific to TikTok if you want. Reports show how your TikTok sessions compare with the time you planned.
Frequently asked questions
How do I limit my time on TikTok?
Use Settings and privacy → Screen time → Daily screen time in TikTok, and add an Android app timer in Digital Wellbeing for a limit that is harder to bypass.
Can I stop TikTok from showing the For You feed?
TikTok does not let you remove the For You feed. You can use the Following tab, search for specific content and set screen time breaks to limit how long you stay.
Why can’t I stop scrolling TikTok?
The feed is designed to remove natural stopping points: videos are short, start automatically and are picked to keep you watching. Adding your own stopping point, such as a planned time or a break reminder, compensates for that.
